How To Grow Your Influence At Work: Talent Stacks

Looking to make significant advances in your career? Learn as many skills as you can to the point where you are at least better than most others at them. You don’t need to be one of the best in all.

This compilation of skills or a talent stack, when combined together, will make you much more useful on teams and in your work. Leaders and colleagues will be drawn to you and will want you to work with them because your contributions will come from multiple angles to power the team through difficulties.

Some of your overlooked talents might often come from past failures. If you’ve had to run Twitter promotion for a company’s project. Even if the campaign did not get much visibility on Twitter or with your senior management, you will still have picked up valuable experience for how to brand on Twitter and how to get people to engage on social media.

This skill and experience will give you a leg up if you ever have to do another project at work or at home related to social media engagement.

Dilbert creator, Scott Adams, discusses Talent Stacks in his book – How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big: Kind of the Story of My Life.

The book is filled with great advice and I would encourage you to read it.

Willingly take on roles outside your comfort zone as they force you to learn.

Don’t focus on having one or two outstanding talents, add to your repertoire many that you are just about decent in.

Some talents that I think make a potent Talent Stack are:

Public speaking

Business writing (clear and persuasive)

Risk management

Understanding of social media and future trends (AI, blockchain, crypto)

Most critical, a good understanding of the art of persuasion based on current behavioral sciences research will allow you to enhance any existing skill. It will make that talent of yours more potent and visible.
