The December 13 Shooting Incident
The attack occurred on Saturday, December 13, 2025, around 4:05 p.m. in the Barus and Holley building, which houses Brown’s engineering and physics departments. The building was occupied by students attending classes, review sessions, and studying during the final exam period.
Two students were killed in the shooting: Ella Cook, a 19-year-old from Alabama, and Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov, an 18-year-old freshman from Uzbekistan who aspired to a career in neurosurgery. Nine others were injured, with several requiring ongoing hospital treatment.
University President Christina H. Paxson described the victims as brilliant and beloved members of the campus community. Immediate alerts prompted students to barricade doors and shelter in place as the gunman fled the scene.
A campus-wide shelter-in-place order remained in effect overnight, supported by hundreds of officers from Providence Police, Rhode Island State Police, and federal agencies. The order was lifted on Sunday morning.
Providence Mayor Brett Smiley noted that the campus’s integration with surrounding residential areas likely facilitated the suspect’s escape beyond immediate surveillance coverage.
Community Response and Ongoing Impact
Brown University canceled all remaining classes, exams, and activities for the fall semester. Early decision admissions notifications were postponed.
Memorials and vigils have continued on campus, with flowers, candles, and photos placed near the shooting site. The incident has contributed to broader national discussions on campus safety and gun violence.
Law enforcement officials have urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information online and to submit tips directly through official channels. The investigation remains active as authorities work to bring resolution to the affected community.
