We tested the new cordless electric leaf blower from EGO this fall and were impressed with its power and performance. It had the leaf-blowing force you expect from a gas blower. It was able to clear out heavy wet leaves with no trouble. Battery weight and run time are the only negatives but there are options to overcome both of these mild drawbacks.

Read this EGO leaf blower review (650 CFM, Model LB6504) to see if it might work for you depending on the size and needs of your yard. This is one of the best and most powerful cordless leaf blowers we’ve tested. Overall, it receives a high score from us.

The beauty of fall is always ruined with the daunting prospect of picking up all those darn leaves before winter comes. If you are a homeowner, understand that there is no good way to get your yard cleaned up. Your are dealing with picking the less evil solution. And we are here to help you with that.

Raking your whole yard is like doing hard labor in prison. Never go with that option. A tractor lawn mower will be the best way to get rid of leaves if you have the right mulching attachment for it. After that, a leaf blower becomes your next best option.

We chose to test and review the EGO leaf blower because it is touted as one of the most powerful cordless electric blowers available by the manufacturer. The possibility to have an electric blower with the force of a gas-powered one was too good to pass up testing on.

What Comes In The Box ( EGO Tool And Charger)

First, let’s take a look at what’s in the box. The version we tested and reviewed was the power tool with battery and charger (Model LB6504). In the box you get the power blower motor, large tube, two nozzles, 5.0 Ah lithium battery, 56-Volt charger, and user manual.

Components of the EGO cordless electric leaf blower 650 CFM laid out on a white floor and background.

There are essentially just two specs in a leaf blower you need to pay attention to. The CFM, which is cubic feet per minute or how much air the blower moves through the nozzle. And wind speed or how much “power” or “lift” you will get for moving heavier debris like wet leaves and small twigs.

For the EGO, you get 650 CFM (on turbo) and 225 to 500 CFM through the variable speed dial. The top wind speed is 180 mph with lower speeds obtained through the speed dial. Let’s see if this is enough power to clean out an average yard filled with fall leaves.

Watch this video where we unbox, review and test out the EGO electric cordless leaf blower in a backyard with fallen, wet leaves. See it in action with a few demos with moving leaves in our yard.

We tested the EGO 650 CFM leaf blower outside in late fall with wet leaves on the ground. The blower was easy to maneuver and had enough power to blast away debris and wet leaves with ease. We rarely needed the turbo setting and could get the job done through the lower speed settings. The lower speeds were particularly handy over flower beds and areas that had mulch. The blower could move out the leaves without removing mulch from the beds.

The 5 Ah battery held its charge for 30-40 minutes for the speeds we needed. While this is good, you may want to get a second battery or go with the battery backpack to complete the full yard. Another approach could be to break up your work schedule with a 1-hour charging time in between.

Apart from the battery run cycle, this is an outstanding cordless electric blower that matches a gas-powered one easily.

While the turbo button setting gets you up to a staggering 650 CFM, you will find that you only need that for something extremely stubborn. In fact, when you are deftly maneuvering your leaf pile you will need to use much less power than 650 CFM. For this, the variable speed knob comes in handy and lets you dial down the power easily to just what you need to move your leaves where you want them to go.

    Speed Control Dial That Locks

Closeup of the green variable speed dial on the EGO leaf blower.

We like the fact that there is a lock on the variable speed dial. This saves you a lot of thumb and finger fatigue compared to models where you have to constantly keep force to adjust the speeds. Since this is a high-powered blower, most of your work will be done at lower speeds, so you really need something to maintain this without having to hold down a button continuously.

Force To Match A Gas-Powered Blower

Closeup of the green turbo button the EGO leaf blower.

We’ve already covered this but it is worth repeating how much power you get with the benefits of electric in this EGO blower. The turbo button gives you a full 650 CFM and over 180 mph wind speeds to clear out stubborn and wet leaves stuck in the grass and in difficult-to-reach bushes.

Putting the blower kit together for use is extremely easy. The plastic tube snaps on to the motor with a simple slide and click. And so do the nozzles (one is round and the other tapered for extra focusing of the blower). Once the battery is fully charged (approx. 1 hour), it snaps on underneath the handle with ease.

EGO has designed the 650 CFM unit rather well. The blower kit is sleek, durable and has a great finish that we’ve come to expect from EGO. We’ve seen some brands that are difficult to piece together. A lack of assembly hassle goes a long way in making a good first impression of the EGO leaf blower.

We wanted to first verify the force and comparability of the EGO 650 CFM to gas blowers. In this case, the model reviewed here lived up to the hype. This is great leaf blower and will be able to handle most of what a fall yard may throw your way.

It was also important to check the weight distribution of the tool for ease of use and limited fatigue. The battery does add weight and will make leaf blowing tedious if you grip the bare tool. To overcome this, we definitely recommend the shoulder strap. The EGO has a nifty metal clip built in for a strap so it is easy to get around this.

As you can see in the video, we tested the blower on fairly wet leaves that had snow/frost recently in the area. The area we cleared out did not have a significant layer of leaves but we feel the EGO 650 CFM would have done the job even with more leaves on the ground.

We considered the easy of use and weight distribution. Since we went with the heavy-duty 5 Ah battery, the whole unit felt a bit heavy after using for over 15 minutes. This is why we recommend a shoulder strap. See our suggestion for a cheap one that works well with this model.

Battery run time came up short and for a bigger yard you will need to stop after about 40 minutes and recharge. Or get the battery backpack.

Overall, this was a powerful leaf blower. With this power range and wind speeds you have in an electric cordless model the kind of power you’d get with a gas-powered blower. You can’t really ask for more.

For what this blower can do, it is light to mid-weight. Blowing for longer durations can cause hand fatigue. Get the shoulder strap to make it easier to work for longer periods. Also get additional batteries or the backpack and you have the perfect solution for your tedious fall leaf pick up and cleaning.

If you already have other EGO power tools, you can just buy the tool only (bare tool). The batteries from your other EGO tools should also work for this 650 CFM leaf blower.

With the 5 Ah battery, the blower is relatively heavy over extended blowing periods. For lower strain, get a shoulder strap that clips on the the EGO blower. You will be thankful for this if you are blowing and cleaning for longer than 15 minutes.

There is a special strap that is sold by EGO. But we found a cheaper one ($8) that is more than handy and fits this model of the EGO. It is adjustable and allows you to position the blower in multiple holding positions.

The two main considerations in your choice for a leaf blower are the size of your yard and the type of leaf blower that works best for you (electric vs. gas).

Picking A Leaf Blower For The Size And Needs Of Your Yard

The size of your yard will help you determine what type of leaf blower works best. If your yard is bigger than an acre, a gas blower could still be the best choice. Electric blowers tend to work well for most people’s yards if you are below an acre. We don’t recommend corded blowers. They only make sense in very special situations. If that applies to you, you will know it.

Cordless Electric Versus Gas Powered Leaf Blowers

Cordless electric leaf blowers are becoming more popular with homeowners for fall leaf cleanup. They require minimal maintenance, unlike gas blowers. In the past, gas blowers had unrivaled power and were the top choice simply for this reason. But the newer cordless electric blowers now have the same power as most high-performance gas models. The EGO 650 CFM model certainly meets this power level and is equivalent to most gas blowers.
