We will show you how to replace the refrigerator light bulb for Whirlpool, KitchenAid and Maytag models that use an E26 base and a 5-watt power rating. We have a link below for the right light bulbs. The easiest way to find the right replacement bulb is to remove the old one and look at the type listed there. If you have one that is so worn that the text and unit numbers are missing, then you will have to look up the user manual. Or search online for the replacement part.

For the refrigerator in this demo the replacement light bulb is E26 base with a 5-watt power rating. If this is your bulb too, below are some links to easily find these bulbs.

Tools & Materials to Replace Refrigerator Light Bulb

Before you start, make sure you have the following tools and materials:

    • A new light bulb with an E26 base and a 5-watt power rating. You can check the label on the old light bulb or the owner’s manual for your refrigerator model to confirm the specifications.
    • A flat blade screwdriver, a Phillips blade screwdriver and a putty knife. These are optional and you are not likely to need.
    • A pair of gloves and safety glasses. These are optional but recommended for your protection.

Before getting to all the steps in the light bulb replacement, here is an overview of the main part – getting the plastic cover off to get to the light bulbs. The cover is usually a plastic piece that protects the bulb from damage and moisture. In most Whirlpool, KitchenAid or Maytag refrigerators, the cover and bulb housing is in the interior of the fridge and on the top ceiling.

Place your palm gently along the plastic cover and push towards the back of the fridge. It should slide off without too much force. If it does not slide off, stop and refer to your user manual. It may need a screwdriver or other tool to remove.

How to Replace Refrigerator Light Bulb

Now, follow these steps to replace the light bulb:

    1. Unplug the refrigerator or disconnect the power from the circuit breaker. This is a safety precaution to prevent any electric shocks or damage to the appliance.
    2. Open the refrigerator door and locate the light bulb. Depending on your model, it may be in the upper part of the fridge, near the temperature control panel, or in the lower part of the fridge, near the crisper drawers. Some models have more than one light bulb, so you may need to replace them all if they are not working.
    3. Remove the light shield if applicable. Some models have a plastic cover that protects the light bulb from moisture and dust. To remove it, press slightly upwards and slide it to the back of the fridge. You may need to press on a tab at the bottom or side for some models.
    4. Gently, unscrew the old light bulb counterclockwise and dispose of it properly. Be careful not to break it or touch it with bare hands if it is hot.
    5. Screw in the new light bulb clockwise until it is snug. Do not overtighten it or force it into place.
    6. Replace the plastic light shield. Align it with the tabs or slots and push it in until it snaps into place.
    7. Close the refrigerator door and plug in the refrigerator or reconnect the power. Check if the light bulb works by opening and closing the door or pressing the switch if there is one.

Refrigerator light bulbs are usually incandescent or LED bulbs, which can be disposed of safely in the household trash. However, some refrigerators may use compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFL), which contain mercury and should not be thrown away.

CFL bulbs should be recycled at a local retailer or a recycling center that accepts them. You can also mail them to a recycling service using a pre-labeled kit. If a CFL bulb breaks, follow the EPA guidelines for cleaning up the mercury and ventilating the room.
