If you have a Whirlpool refrigerator that uses water filter 4 (part number EDR4RXD1), you may be wondering how to replace it when it reaches the end of its lifespan. Replacing the water filter is a simple and quick process that can improve the taste and quality of your water and ice.

The Whirlpool, KitchenAid and Maytag brands are all owned by the same parent company. The procedure is similar across the three refrigerator brands as a result.

In this quick guide, we will show you how to replace the water filter 4 on your Whirlpool, KitchenAid or Maytag refrigerator in a few easy steps. An easy process that will get you and your family back to drinking clear filtered water again.

Why do you Need to Replace the Water Filter?

The water filter in your refrigerator is designed to reduce contaminants such as lead, chlorine, cysts, pesticides, and pharmaceuticals from your water supply. These contaminants can affect the flavor, odor, and safety of your water and ice. The water filter also protects your refrigerator from sediment buildup that can damage the water valve and ice maker.

The water filter should be replaced every six months or when the indicator light on your refrigerator turns red. This will ensure that you always have fresh and clean water and ice for drinking and cooking. If you use a significant amount of water through your fridge, the filter may need to be changed before six months.

How do you Know if Your Filter Needs Replacing?

Besides the indicator light, there are other signs that your filter needs replacing. For example, you may notice a change in the taste or smell of your water or ice, a decrease in the water flow or pressure, or ice cubes that are smaller or cloudy. These are indications that your filter is clogged or worn out and needs to be replaced as soon as possible.

If you need to buy a new water filter 4 for your Whirlpool refrigerator, you have several options to choose from. You can order one directly from EveryDrop, which is the official brand of Whirlpool filters. You can also find them at major retailers such as Home Depot or Amazon.

Alternatively, you can look for aftermarket filters that are certified by NSF International to meet the same standards as Whirlpool filters. One example is IcePure, which offers filters for about 70 percent less than Whirlpool filters. In our video, we used the latter and find that it is a good substitute.

How to Replace the Water Filter on your Whirlpool, Maytag or KitchenAid Refrigerator

Before you start, make sure you have a new water filter 4 ready to install. You can purchase one from your local retailer or online from EveryDrop. You may also want to have a towel handy to catch any drips or spills.

To replace the water filter 4 on your Whirlpool refrigerator, follow these steps:

    1. Open the right door of your refrigerator and locate the water filter housing in the upper right corner.
    2. Press the locking tab on the front of the housing and lower it down to access the filter.
    3. Turn the old filter counterclockwise and pull it out of the housing. Discard it or recycle it according to local regulations.
    4. Remove the top lid from the new filter and align it with the grooves in the housing.
    5. Push the new filter into the housing and turn it clockwise until it locks in place.
    6. Push the housing back up until it snaps closed.
    7. Reset the indicator light by pressing and holding the button for three seconds.
    8. Run the water dispenser for about one minute to flush out any air and activate the filter.

You have successfully replaced the water filter 4 on your Whirlpool refrigerator. You should repeat this process every six months or when the indicator light turns red again (if your refrigerator model supports this). Enjoy fresh and filtered water and ice from your Whirlpool refrigerator!

This same process works for Maytag, KitchenAid, and other compatible brands that use water filter 4. To check if your refrigerator model is compatible with this filter, you can read the part numbers and type on the old filter after you remove it. Refer to your user manual, if you have it. Or find the manual or part on the manufacturer’s website.

How to Dispose of Refrigerator Water Filters

According to some sources, you have two main options: throwing it in the garbage or recycling it.

Throwing it in the garbage is the easiest way, but it may not be the most environmentally friendly. Some parts of the filter, such as the plastic housing, can take a long time to decompose in landfills. Recycling it can help reduce waste and save resources, but it may require some extra steps.

Some refrigerator manufacturers, such as GE and Whirlpool, offer recycling programs for their filters. You can check their websites or contact their customer service for more information. They may provide you with instructions, prepaid packaging, or even discounts for your next filter purchase.

Additional Help with Replacing Fridge Water Filters

Refrigerator manufacturers have located water filters in easily accessible positions. Changing them is easy as you’ve seen here. But you can always check your owner’s manual for more details.
