You may have heard some people say that they start the first day of each month by saying the words “rabbit, rabbit” before doing anything else. Good luck and fortune are supposed to then follow you for the rest of the month. But where did this tradition start, and does it work?

And if you have no idea what this means, you are not alone. Many people are unaware of this quirky tradition that some people follow on the first day of every month.

The Origins of Saying “Rabbit, Rabbit” on the First Day of the Month

According to folklore, saying “rabbit rabbit” as the first words out of one’s mouth on the first day of the month will bring them good luck for the rest of the month. Some variations include saying “white rabbits” or “bunny bunny”. The origin of this superstition is unclear, but some sources trace it back to the 19th century in Britain or America.

So why rabbits? Well, rabbits are symbols of fertility, abundance, and prosperity in many cultures. They are also associated with springtime and renewal. Plus, they are cute and fluffy, so why not?

President Franklin D. Roosevelt reportedly said “rabbit rabbit” on the first day of every month during his presidency. He believed that it would help him overcome the challenges he faced during the Great Depression and World War II.

Another possible source of this tradition is the popular book Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. In the story, Alice follows a white rabbit down a hole and enters a fantastical world full of strange creatures and events. Some people may have interpreted this as a sign that following a rabbit can lead to adventure and fortune.

    Family Traditions

All signs point to this being just a fun family tradition to bring a spark at the beginning of the month.

Growing up, my mother instilled the quirky tradition of saying “rabbit, rabbit” on the first day of every month. It became a charming routine in our household, a superstition passed down through generations. I vividly remember the anticipation and excitement as we eagerly uttered those words, believing in the promised wave of good fortune that would follow.

Now, as a parent myself, I’ve joyfully embraced this family tradition and shared it with my daughter. It’s heartwarming to witness the continuation of this whimsical custom across generations. During our calls, my mother and daughter exchange the familiar “rabbit, rabbit” greeting, creating a delightful bond that transcends distance.

What to do if You Forget to Say “Rabbit, Rabbit”

But what if someone forgot to say “rabbit rabbit” this morning? Are you doomed to have bad luck for the rest of January? Of course not! There are some ways to reverse the curse, according to some believers.

One way is to say “tibbar tibbar” (rabbit rabbit backwards) before one goes to sleep on the first day of the month. Another way is to say “black rabbit” or “black rabbits” at night and then “white rabbit” or “white rabbits” in the morning. A third way is to say “rabbit rabbit rabbit” as fast as one can before noon.

Saying “rabbit rabbit” is a fun and harmless way to start the month with a positive attitude. It’s like a mini ritual that reminds one to be grateful for what they have and hopeful for what’s to come. And who knows, maybe it does bring some good luck along the way.

    True or Quirky?

Luck comes and goes. We can only hope in the end. But whether uttering these magic words on the 1st of the month bring fortune or just fill us with a fun tradition, remains to be seen. But my mother swears by this.

These shared moments not only connect us to our family’s past but also infuse our lives with a sense of magic and togetherness, making the tradition more than just a superstition—it’s a cherished part of our family story.

But remember, whatever happens this month, don’t let it get you down. You have the power to create your own luck by working hard, being kind, and staying optimistic.

There are also ways (science-backed) to increase your luck. Did you know that? It’s true and you can read about it here.
